Frenectomies are not limited to infants only but can be treated at any age.
If you suspect that your child is having such problems, please schedule an appointment today for an evaluation.
What is tongue tie or Ankyloglossia?
Many babies, children and adults suffer from a condition called “Tongue Tie” or “Lip Tie.” This condition is simply the connection of two areas in the mouth by a muscular attachment called frena (frenum in plural). Perhaps the most common form of tongue or lip tie is when the tongue is connected to the bottom of the mouth by a frenum which is too short thus restricting the normal movement of the tongue. The second area of concern is when the upper lip is connected to the gums just above the upper two front teeth. Either of these conditions can cause a variety of problems.
How to identify lip & tongue ties in infants
• Poor latch when nursing
• Falls asleep while attempting to latch
• Unable to hold pacifier
• Gumming or chewing when nursing
• Poor weight gain
• Unable to use a bottle
What is a Frenectomy?
A frenectomy is simply a procedure to release the frenum attachment and allow normal function. Laser is a kinder method of revision. There is no known contraindication for frenum laser surgery in a normal healthy patient. Since no medications or drugs are used, just "Laser Light" energy, there is no chance of any allergic or drug reaction.
• No need for anesthesia
• Bactericidal: virtually no chance of infection
• Infant is away from mother for less than 10 minutes
• More precise surgery
• Improved healing
• Infant breastfed immediately after the procedure
We Can Help
Dr. Berrahil uses a state-of-the-art water laser while performing procedure. She is able to complete the procedure on infants, quickly and virtually pain free with a reduced need for anesthesia.
